Mino - yaki (ware) is one of the best-known Japanese traditional potteries.
This tea bowl is made by Keito Kiln (景陶).

-- Mino Ware has a history of about 1,300 years. --
The first pottery made with a technique brought in from Korea was called "Sueki". Remains of kilns used to make Sueki in the 7th century are found in Toki City.
In the 10th century in the Heian period, Sueki was Improved to "Shirashi" which used glazing. From this period on, the number of kilns increased and pottery making developed to be the leading industry of the city.
During the years from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early years of the Edo period, pottery reflected the taste of tea masters as tea ceremony grew in popularity. The pottery of this style made in that period is called Mino-Momoyama ware.
Production of porcelain, which is harder, whiter and more durable than pottery, began in Kyushu in the beginning of the Edo period. In Toki City and the neighboring area also, porcelain production began in the last days of the Edo period. Ever since, Toki City has been a center for production of pottery and porcelain, being supported by techniques and craftsmanship established over a long span of time.
Mino ware have made beautiful and stout pottery with modernistic produce in large volume.
As it is now Mino ware have a 50% share of the pottery market in Japan.
